Last question 1st. I started Tae Kwon Do at age 44. Next question.
It depends on what you mean by Karate. Do you specifically mean those styles that use that name? They are from Okinawa & Japan. Typically, Okinawan styles (Gojoryu, Shorin Ryu & Ishin Ryu) emphasize hand techniques. Japanese styles (Shotokan, Kempo) use about equal hand & foot techniques.
If you are using "Karate" to mean any martial art that emphasizes strikes, you have to include Shaolin Boxing, which is roughly split into northern & southern. Southern style emphasizes hand techniques (It’s where the Okinawans got their style). Northern is more like Tae Kwon Do & Tang Soo Do which are Korean. You will get arguments as to who 1st introduced the emphasis on kicking, but there is no denying that both Noerthern Shaolin & the Korean arts of TKD & TSD (there is very little difference) use a lot of kicks. Find a good instructor in a styls that suits you.
